The History of Bombillazo

2020

Origins

In 2003, I chose “Bombillazo” as my digital moniker for going online. It comes from the Spanish word bombilla — lightbulb — a nod to bright ideas. It became the personal brand that represented my online presence and creative endeavors. During the summer of 2006, I became a member of the online Nintendo forums. There I started creating art content for other users. This eventually led to the creation of Bombillazo Studios as a brand for my work.

This was a period of exploration, learning, and honing my content creation skills. Soon after, I launched my first website for Bombillazo Studios using FreeWebs.com to share my content; my first step into the world of web design. The original logo quickly followed in 2007. I created every iteration of the logo and animation in Autodesk Maya, and recorded the original music on my Yamaha DGX-500.

Then I went to college. After a few semesters, I decided to revamp the website and build it from scratch. This was the first rebrand, albeit minor. I launched the second website for Bombillazo Studios in 2009 with my new software knowledge.

Here’s how the logo evolved over the years:

This was the final logo intro — though I never got to use it before the rebrand.

Rebrand

After over a decade with the original Bombillazo Studios identity, I decided it was time for an update. I had graduated college and wanted to explore a more professional and sleek aesthetic. Around 2016, I split the brand of Bombillazo Studios into two: Bombillazo as an umbrella for all my work and Bombillazo Studios for my content creation. This was the first step towards the rebrand. I was originally planning to have multiple ventures under Bombillazo, prompting this split.

In this first phase of the rebrand, I launched new sites for Bombillazo Studios and Bombillazo. The Bombillazo Studios site incorporated a highly functional and modern design, while the Bombillazo site functioned as a landing page for my ventures. I also updated the logo, iconography and typography usage.

In 2019, I refined the whole brand even more with a newer stylescape to define the direction:

After weeks of experimenting and iterating, I completed the final phase of the Bombillazo rebrand, arriving at the current version. I redesigned the website using elements from the previous 2 sites. I consolidated ideas, added new content, and simplified the UX. I even created brand style guidelines and defined the values behind the new identity.

The full details are in the Brand Style Guidelines:

Bombillazo Icon

This is the current Bombillazo logo — inspired and simplified from the original, with “Studios” dropped. It represents me, my ideas, and my work. Bombillazo is where engineering, design, and creative projects come together. Most importantly, it is a place to share my work with people, gather impressions and receive feedback. Bombillazo keeps evolving, and I look forward to continuing my effort of inspiring with delightful new ideas.
